Press Release

Mark Moore Gallery is pleased to announce new paintings by Samantha Magowan and Allison Schulnik. Both artists live and work in Los Angeles.

Samantha Magowan's paintings explore mass media imagery, in particular those of travel photography and pornography. Attentive to the mediated nature of these images, Magowan provides her own interference, using richly patterned surfaces -- reminiscent of those of Gustav Klimt -- and formal playfulness to veil the people depicted in her work. Functioning like ben-day dots or television pixels, Magowan's patterns figure and shape her subjects.

Allison Schulnik draws on historical images, outsider art traditions and holiday snapshots to construct paintings in which naval battles and volcanoes, waterfalls and herds of wild horses become the subject for fantasy and imagination.
