Press Release

FOLLOWING ON HIS WELL-RECEIVED DEBUT SOLO EXHIBITION (INERTIAL FIELD) IN NEW YORK THIS PAST SEPTEMBER AT BRONWYN KEENAN GALLERY, MARK MOORE GALLERY, SANTA MONICA IS PLEASED TO PRESENT SHADOW PROXY, AN INSTALLATION BY STEPHEN HENDEE, FROM JANUARY 16 - MARCH 6, 1999.

HENDEE, WHO WAS BORN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND MOST RECENTLY RESIDED IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA BEFORE RE-LOCATING TO NEW YORK, WAS THE 1998 RECIPIENT OF A POLLOCK-KRASNER FOUNDATION GRANT, AND IN 1997 RECEIVED A RESIDENCY GRANT IN NEW YORK FROM THE MARIE WALSH SHARPE FOUNDATION (WHERE HENDEE PRESENTED VAULTED, IN TANDEM WITH INERTIAL FIELD AT KEENAN), AS WELL AS A KIRIN CONTEMPORARY ART AWARD, WHICH RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF WORKS IN TOKYO AND OSAKA, JAPAN.

STEPHEN HENDEE’S ARENA IS THE CONFLUENCE OF SCIENCE AND LANDSCAPE - SITE-SPECIFIC, ENVELOPING SCULPTURAL INSTALLATIONS THAT FIND THEIR GENESIS IN THE HALCYON IDEALS OF THE MERZBAU AND EARLY CONSTRUCTIVIST AND SUPREMATIST PAINTING OF OUR EARLY, PRO-MECHANIZED CENTURY.

UTILIZING CONTEMPORARY ELEMENTS AS DIVERSE AS COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, TECHNO MUSIC, THE SET DESIGNS OF BLADE RUNNER BY SYD MEAD, AND UNDERGROUND POP LITERATURE (PHILIP K. DICK), HENDEE’S ENVIRONMENTS

DISPLACE THE VIEWER INSIDE THE DISTURBINGLY QUIET BODY OF AN ORGANISM THAT IS BOTH MAN AND MACHINE, IN WHICH NEITHER HAS ASCENDANCY, AND WHERE PERCEPTIONS OF LUSH AND BARREN ARE IN CONSTANT STRUGGLE.

THE MARK MOORE GALLERY INSTALLATION OF 1999 WILL ENCOMPASS THE ENTIRE 30-FOOT SQUARE MAIN GALLERY; ANCILLARY INK DRAWINGS BY THE ARTIST WILL BE PRESENTED IN THE SECOND GALLERY.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY, ENGLAND, WILL INCLUDE HENDEE IN A 2000 EXHIBITION ENTITLED THE DIGITAL CABINET OF WONDERS; ROCHELLE STEINER OF THE ST. LOUIS ART MUSEUM WILL INCLUDE HENDEE IN WONDERLAND, A GROUP EXHIBITION OF LARGE-SCALE INSTALLATIONS, IN JUNE 2000.
