Smith’s exhibition of photographs entitled, The Ritual of the Game, will be comprised of images of baseball artifacts from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Pennsylvania. Smith was the first artist given access to photograph the historic collection of gloves and masks, the earliest dating from 1870. All the objects were shot on a white screen, to create a blurring of contextual and cultural origin. It is Smith’s intention to hinge meaning between sports and religious artifacts. The banality of sports equipment appears as an archeological find.
